Bukit Chagar
Bukit Chagar was a housing estate in Johor Bahru, just opposite Singapore. Slated for demolition, the residents moved out over the months, leaving it an abandoned concrete jungle in the midst of the city. I visited the estate in March 2008 with Azharr, who just shot this first feature film here. I have yet to watch the film – This Longing or Punggok Rindukan Bulan (The Owl Misses The Moon) – but it has been doing well in film festivals. Johor Bahru, Malaysia, 2008.
Someone forgets to bring along their family album. Or perhaps they left it behind deliberately. The marriage certificate is in it too.
One of the last residents moving out before the electricity and water supplies are cut off.
Azharr Rudin. He grew up here.
